Chapter 2
Just as Kiyohara Jun and Kogu Takuto both believed the other was a blockhead, someone suddenly knocked on the office door.
“Executive Candidate Kiyohara,” a deeply respectful voice came from outside the door. “These are the detailed files for the missions you will be responsible for over the next period of time. May I ask whether you have time to receive them now?”
Just as Kiyohara Jun took a step toward the door, intending to go over and receive the mission files himself, Kogu Takuto glared at him fiercely.
“Go back to your seat and sit there obediently.” Kogu Takuto only felt as if he were Kiyohara Jun’s old nanny. Earnestly, he said, “You are already an executive candidate. An executive candidate must have the dignity of an executive candidate. Do not handle everything personally.”
Kiyohara Jun did not think that taking the initiative to open a door would damage an executive candidate’s dignity. However, according to past experience, if he refuted Takuto, then Takuto would fall into a state of self-absorption, forget the person outside the door existed, and subject him to a three-hour lecture.
Kiyohara Jun had originally intended to obediently return to his seat, but before he moved, he first noticed the words on the bullet comments.
【The adjutant really is a blockhead, hahahahahahaha.】
【Silly adjutant. The reason Jun wanted to go over was because he realized there was something wrong with the person outside.】
【Something wrong? Why did I not hear anything wrong? It sounded like a perfectly normal handover of work.】
【Let me explain, hhhhh. Generally speaking, documents are submitted to a superior by subordinates from their own department, not by someone from another department contacting them directly, right? But if you look carefully, you will notice that the person outside used the phrase “your side.” In other words, he is not Jun’s subordinate. He is not Jun’s subordinate, yet he came to deliver documents. That is why we say this person is suspicious.】
【Holy crap, what kind of masters are the people in the bullet comments? How can you even notice details like this?】
【We are not the masters. Kiyohara Jun is the master. We are all here on our second or third watch to see how Kiyohara Jun managed to predict the future. Once you know the result and work backward, it becomes very simple.】
【I really thought Kiyohara Jun was a blockhead. I did not expect that I was the one who had thought too little.】
What do they mean, there is something wrong with the person outside? Kiyohara Jun thought blankly. He had only wanted to open the door in a perfectly ordinary way. It was not because he had noticed anything suspicious about the person outside.
However, if these words called bullet comments were right, then there was something wrong with the person outside? Kiyohara Jun frowned slightly—though, of course, there was no trace of a frown on his expressionless face. He looked toward Kogu Takuto, who was preparing to open the door, and just as he was about to stop him, Kogu Takuto had already opened it.
A gunshot rang out. Yet faster than the gunshot was Kiyohara Jun’s ability. A thick cement wall appeared between Kogu Takuto and the person outside the door. The bullet lodged itself in the cement wall and did not hit the stunned Kogu Takuto.
“It is an assassin,” Kiyohara Jun said in a low voice. “Takuto, come to my side.”
Before the shaken Kogu Takuto could react, Kiyohara Jun sensed what had happened on the other side of the cement wall. His expression sharpened, and in an instant, he appeared in front of Kogu Takuto.
He withdrew the cement wall. The assassin, having failed in his attempt, had already gone silent.
“It was poison.” Kiyohara Jun crouched down and examined him. In the end, he concluded that the assassin had committed suicide by taking poison.
【Jun is so handsome!!!】
【Husband, I love you!】
【Once again, I have to admire Jun. Having intelligence alone would be one thing, but his combat strength is also this powerful.】
【Is his ability earth manipulation? It feels like this kind of ability is the strongest.】
【So handsome, so handsome. Let me lick, lick, lick.】
【The screen is wet. Whose drool is that? Oh, it is mine. Never mind, then.】
By the time the Port Mafia’s internal guards arrived, everything had already been settled. Even Kogu Takuto had recovered from the panic of nearly dying.
“How exactly are you people doing your job as guards?” Kogu Takuto sternly berated the group of guards who had arrived far too late. His face, which looked every inch like that of a corporate slave, was filled with anger. “Are you protecting Executive Candidate Kiyohara, or is Executive Candidate Kiyohara protecting you?”
“It is one thing that you failed to discover the assassin’s presence, but you could not even arrive in time!”
“We are deeply sorry, Lord Kiyohara, Lord Kogu.” The leader of the guards bent at the waist and apologized. After sweeping a glance at Kiyohara Jun’s expression from the corner of his eye, a layer of cold sweat broke out on the leader’s forehead.
At this moment, Kiyohara Jun’s world-weary face unexpectedly had an intimidating effect. The leader already felt that Kiyohara Jun was looking at them as if they were dead men.
“The reason we did not search the assassin was because the assassin himself was a familiar face within the Port Mafia. In addition, Lord Furukawa had just transferred away some of the guard personnel, causing a shortage of guards.” Under the threat of death, the leader tried to offer an explanation. “We also failed to arrive in time because there were not enough guards.”
After saying this, the leader took a deep breath and waited for Kiyohara Jun to explode.
However, Kiyohara Jun himself had long since stopped paying attention to this matter. He was carefully studying the words before his eyes known as bullet comments, and had begun considering whether they were real.
If this is an enemy’s ability, why would it warn me that the person outside the door was an assassin? Kiyohara Jun frowned. But this could also have been done to make me lower my guard. Perhaps that assassin outside was sent by the enemy who used this ability on me.
The more Kiyohara Jun thought about it, the more he frowned. The expression on his face also darkened slightly, and that slight darkness was immediately noticed by the leader, who had been watching his microexpressions the entire time.
It seems I will not escape death today. The leader’s teeth trembled.
Kogu Takuto waited and waited, but Kiyohara Jun still did not make a decision. He could not help turning his head to see what Kiyohara Jun was doing.
At first glance, he did not understand. At the second, he nearly lost his mind. Kogu Takuto, who understood all kinds of Kiyohara Jun’s microexpressions extremely well, soberly realized that his unreliable superior had actually started spacing out at a time like this.
Maybe I should just resign, he thought rather tragically. If I keep assisting this idiot Kiyohara Jun, my lifespan will be shortened by ten years.
Under everyone’s eyes, it was not convenient for Kogu Takuto to do anything to bring Kiyohara Jun back to his senses, so he could only wait anxiously along with the leader for Kiyohara Jun to speak.
At last, after thinking for ages and still failing to reach a conclusion, Kiyohara Jun gave up thinking. He came back to himself and saw Kogu Takuto signaling at him with his eyes. Only then did he finally remember that he still had a group of guards to deal with.
“Go receive your punishment yourselves,” Kiyohara Jun said expressionlessly to the guards, all of whom breathed a sigh of relief after he spoke. “There will not be a next time.”
The leader looked as if he had just been fished out of the water. His whole body was covered in cold sweat from the anxiety of waiting for judgment.
“Thank you very much for your mercy, Lord Kiyohara!” The leader could not help becoming tearful. Executive Candidate Kiyohara must have refrained from making a decision just now because he wanted to see how well they had reflected on their mistakes. He was grateful for Executive Candidate Kiyohara’s mercy. Not only had he left their lives intact despite their failure as guards, but now they would not even lose their jobs!
Kiyohara Jun nodded. Although he did not understand what about telling them to receive punishment was worthy of gratitude for his mercy, Takuto had said that at times like this, he must not ask questions in return. He only needed to nod.
【The carrot and the stick. The carrot and the stick!】
【First, he made them despair, then he gave them hope. And with that, he successfully won over a group of people.】
【Kiyohara Jun’s move this time: 66666666.】
【Badass. Truly badass.】
【When I saw Jun’s expression just now, I thought this group of guards was going to die.】
What carrot and stick?
Kiyohara Jun once again fell into confusion. He felt that ever since these bullet comments had appeared around him, the number of times he questioned things had increased more and more.
This group of bullet comments seemed to have some kind of misunderstanding about him. They were always interpreting his every movement and action into something else, as though he were the sort of person whose every act carried deep meaning.
After the guards left, Kogu Takuto looked left and right. Once he noticed there was no one else there, he finally stopped forcing himself to keep up appearances and glared fiercely at Kiyohara Jun.
“You were actually spacing out just now.” Kogu Takuto looked utterly disappointed in him.
“Spacing out at a time like that. I truly do not know how you managed to sit in the position of Port Mafia executive candidate.”
“I was not spacing out,” Kiyohara Jun seriously refuted. “I was thinking.”
“What is the difference between thinking about irrelevant things at a time like that and spacing out?” Kogu Takuto refused to listen to Kiyohara Jun’s explanation and sneered. “And just now, you actually let them off directly. That is far too lacking in the dignity of a Mafia executive candidate.”
“If I had dignity, the first person to be dealt with would definitely be Takuto.” Kiyohara Jun thought that the person who showed him the least respect was this adjutant, Takuto, who lectured him every day.
“You…” Kogu Takuto sadly discovered that he no longer became angry because of Kiyohara Jun’s “excellent” language skills. After all, a blockhead truly did not know how he ought to speak.
“I think that if Tomioka Giyuu from Demon Slayer really existed, the two of you would definitely have a lot in common.” In the end, Kogu Takuto could only roast Kiyohara Jun powerlessly like this.
【Adjutant, you really found the key point. Jun’s usual behavior really does resemble Giyuu’s, hahahahahaha.】
【What the heck is Demon Slay〇r, hahahahahahaha. Are they worried about copyright issues?】
【Besides wanting to use the carrot and the stick just now, Jun was actually also thinking about where the assassin came from, right?】
【Actually, the person who sent the assassin never intended to kill Jun at all. He only wanted to kill the adjutant to disgust Jun.】
【Right. Because everyone inside the Port Mafia knows the adjutant would definitely be the one to open the door, the assassin’s real target was actually the adjutant.】
【As for who sent the assassin, that person’s actions were so stupid and obvious that it is hard to ignore even if you want to.】
Yes, the person who sent the assassin was exactly the one mentioned in the bullet comments. In his heart, Kiyohara Jun quietly recited the name at the same time as the bullet comments.
Furukawa Masato.
A Port Mafia executive candidate, one of the Boss’s loyal followers, and also a competitor who utterly detested Kiyohara Jun.
